The quarry review: shea whigham and michael shannon heat up this slow burn thriller

For years, the Hollywood landscape has been dominated by big-budget mega-blockbusters. Inthe situation has changed. Thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, the entire Summer movie season has been effectively cancelled.

While some movies have been picked up by various streaming services, most have been delayed to later in or even later. Thus, audiences have turned to smaller releases on Video on Demand and Digital retailers to fill the void. The Quarry is one such film. A modern Western starring Shea Whigham and Michael ShannonThe Quarry follows a mysterious drifter Whigham who murders the incoming preacher of a small town and steals his identity, preaching a gospel of forgiveness to the locals.

When the preacher's body is discovered, it's only a matter of time before the drifter is inevitably caught in his increasingly tangled web of lies and deceit. Shannon plays the town's sheriff, who is suspicious of the drifter and is trying to put all the pieces together before an innocent man is put away for a murder he did not commit. It's an intense, slow-burn, dialogue-driven modern Western, and that's just the way Michael Shannon likes it.

While promoting the release of The QuarryMichael Shannon spoke to Screen Rant about his work on the film, from his love of dialogue scenes a trait he inherited from his theater upbringing to the projects he's had to put on hold during the current Coronavirus pandemic. He discusses his favorite part of shooting 's Man of Steel with director Zack Snyderand talks about how his growing clout as a big-name actor helped get The Quarry made.

How are you doing? You're in Brooklyn right? If I may ask, how's everything at home with the quarantine and everything? We stayed in Brooklyn. I guess a lot of people ran to the hills, but I don't know We like our house, so we stayed in it, you know? Let's talk about The Quarry. It's my kind of tense, claustrophobic, dialogue-driven thriller, a modern western that feels like it could be a stage play.

Honestly, I don't know what it's like to watch, but as an actor, it's a lot of fun, it's more enjoyable to do a dialogue scene than it is to do stunts. At least for me. I don't really enjoy riding around on a horse or shooting guns or acting like I'm fighting somebody. But I like doing scenes where I get to say interesting dialogue or listen to somebody else talk.

I think, honestly, for me as an audience member when I watch stuff, I find that stuff more intriguing as well. Zod is a really fascinating guy in that movie.

My favorite part of Man of Steel was the story and characters and the situation. In the midst of all the fighting and whatnot, when Zod is actually being very frank with Superman, you know, saying, "This is why I'm doing what I'm doing, this is my job. This is what I've been through," you know? Those moments where they connect with one another, those are the moments that interest me.

I mean, the fighting is cool as hell, don't get me wrong!Their selections ooze with originality and the festival encourages filmmakers to bring forth their most creative and inspired projects to put on display.

It's a festival that prides itself on its immensely entertaining slate that relishes in a variety of genres. Unfortunately, due to the unpredictability of COVID and how quickly the virus has spread, SXSW was officially canceled this year for the first time in its year history.

As heartbreaking as this was, many individuals still strived to get their highly-anticipated features seen. Scott Teems' latest film was among those in search of viewers and a place to eventually call home after the chaotic closure of the festival. Although The Quarry feels lackluster in its execution, it's an intriguing story of redemption that's largely carried by a captivating Michael Shannon.

The premise of this film boasts so much thrilling potential, but often, it feels as if Teems is holding back from unleashing its full power. It's difficult to find a way to connect with The Man, let alone feel interested in his narrative arc.

He's not alone in this, either. His character is interesting, lived-in with the small-town environment around him, and unapologetically authentic. Even Bobby Soto deliveres a strong performance as a wrongly-convicted Mexican man named Valentin -- another character who offered up the possibility of an exciting narrative exploration into race relations in small-town America. It's clear that Teems had a grand vision in mind, but the end result doesn't quite hit that mark. It is 98 minutes long and rated R for some violence and language.

You might wonder how somebody so surly and monosyllabic is going to make it as a preacher, but the parishioners take to his blunt, non-judgmental ways. Complications, of course, arise almost immediately. That van is broken into by the local drug dealer and his year-old brother almost immediately, and they see the bloody clothes and figure out that the new preacher is hiding something.

But the plot details matter less than the tone and mood that Teems creates, and the nuances that Whigham and Shannon bring to their performances. More and more, the movie focuses on a question: If a man without conscience pretends to be a man of God, will he inevitably develop a conscience?

Desperation begets more desperation, setting the stage for a border-town tale of imposture, sin, and redemption. Yet this muddled slow-burn tragedy—adapted from the Damon Galgut novel of the same name—is unfocused and overly familiar.

It also fumbles its political commentary. Paradoxically, the drifter turns to the local authorities for help; in charge is Chief Moore, played by Michael Shannon in a dialed-down version of his Nocturnal Animals character.

Sadly, Sandino Moreno is given little to do beyond play off the two Boardwalk Empire alumni. The Quarry is far from the first movie about a criminal posing as a man of God, as pitting those opposite identities against one another promises an enticing subversion of expectations. Whigham anchors The Man with his hauntingly austere and mostly wordless performance, heightening the air of secrecy enveloping his character.

As the film ramps up to an inevitable fallout, its focus gravitates toward Chief Moore, growing ever closer to cracking the case. But this aspect emerges too late and too diffusely.

A scattered screenplay with more regard for atmosphere than building out its many moving parts prevents any truly thoughtful statement about the double standards faced by immigrants. But The Quarry falls short of that ideal. The A. Shop Subscribe. Reviews Movie Review. Read on. Subscribe To Our Newsletter. Now you can get the top stories from The A. Club delivered to your inbox. Along the way, David begins to suspect the wanderer may be a fugitive, resulting in an altercation that leaves David in a shallow grave and The Man with all his belongings. Although never fully expounded upon, Teems teases a history of judgment and pain in the fictional town of Bevel, Texas.

As The Man begins his preaching, he is met with the challenge of connecting with a predominately Mexican congregation, most of whom do not even speak English. Like The Man, Moore is propelled by a sense of duty under questionable circumstances. While each character is burdened with resentment of their past, not a lot is known about any one of them to make their journeys particularly compelling.

Yet, the details of his crimes are under-explained in a reveal that comes way too late to bear much significance. Teems weaves a tapestry of muddled ethics that is mostly carried by the capable performances of his A-List cast — and makes for a few suitably engaging interactions between Whigham and Shannon in particular — but there are otherwise too few thrills or surprises to be found in the slow-burn yarn that unfolds.

One note portrayals, skin deep characters, and a glacial pace all combine to prevent The Quarry from succeeding either as a slow-burn thriller or a message-oriented drama.

Seeing a body by the side of the road, he gets out to investigate. Martin offers assistance — a meal and a ride. His face is a blank; his voice, a monotone. Some energy is provided by Michael Shannon, who seems to be the only one in the film with any degree of vigor.

He provides color to a movie that otherwise seems trapped in black-and-white. As Celia, the woman who runs the boarding house where the preacher stays, Catalina Sandino Moreno whose performance in Maria Full of Grace was one of the great forgotten acting turns of the s fits the classic definition of an underused talent.

Other supporting characters are equally poorly realized. If the immigration angle and the tension between white Americans and Mexicans seems unfocused, the reason may relate to the source material.

The novel transpires in post-Apartheid South Africa, where racial tensions were an overriding social issue. After a strong beginning, The Quarry turns into a slog. The criminal investigation is as disappointing as the character-based elements; it relies too much on contrivance and coincidence and the resolution is oddly presented and disappointingly anticlimactic.
